What Is Binary Bit Toggle?

Toggling a binary bit means changing its value to the opposite state. A 0 becomes 1, while a 1 becomes 0.

How to Toggle a Binary Bit

1. Enter the Binary String

Use only binary digits 0 and 1.

2. Choose a Bit Position

Position numbering starts from 0 at the rightmost bit.

3. Read the Selected Bit

Identify whether that bit currently contains 0 or 1.

4. Flip the Bit

Replace 0 with 1 or replace 1 with 0.

Bit Toggle and XOR

Toggling a bit is equivalent to applying XOR with a mask containing a 1 at the selected position.

Toggle position 2 of: 101100 Mask: 000100 XOR: 101100 000100 —— 101000

Because XOR with 1 flips a bit, while XOR with 0 leaves it unchanged.

Why Preserve Leading Zeros?

Bit positions depend on the exact width of the supplied binary word. Removing leading zeros can change which position corresponds to each visible bit.

Input: 00101100 This is treated as an 8-bit sequence, so positions run from: 7 down to 0 The leading zeros are preserved after toggling.

What If the Bit Position Is Too Large?

The selected position must exist within the entered binary string. For an n-bit value, valid positions are:

0 through n – 1 For a 6-bit binary string: Valid positions = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Position 6 or higher is outside the binary word and produces an error.
