Binary Bit Toggle Calculator
Toggle any selected bit in a binary string. Choose a bit position to flip
0 to 1 or 1 to 0
without changing the original bit width.
What Is Binary Bit Toggle?
Toggling a binary bit means changing its value to the opposite state.
A 0 becomes 1, while a 1 becomes
0.
1.
Toggle it:
1 → 0
Result:
101000
How to Toggle a Binary Bit
1. Enter the Binary String
Use only binary digits 0 and 1.
2. Choose a Bit Position
Position numbering starts from 0 at the rightmost bit.
3. Read the Selected Bit
Identify whether that bit currently contains 0 or 1.
4. Flip the Bit
Replace 0 with 1 or replace 1 with 0.
Bit Position Numbering
This calculator follows common programming convention and numbers bits from the right, starting at position 0.
Example: Toggle Position 0
Example: Toggle Position 2

Bit Toggle and XOR
Toggling a bit is equivalent to applying XOR with a mask containing a
1 at the selected position.
Because XOR with 1 flips a bit, while XOR with 0 leaves it unchanged.
Bit Toggle vs Bit Set
| Operation | Effect |
|---|---|
| Toggle Bit | 0 becomes 1, and 1 becomes 0. |
| Set Bit | The selected bit becomes 1 regardless of its original value. |
| Clear Bit | The selected bit becomes 0 regardless of its original value. |
Why Preserve Leading Zeros?
Bit positions depend on the exact width of the supplied binary word. Removing leading zeros can change which position corresponds to each visible bit.
What If the Bit Position Is Too Large?
The selected position must exist within the entered binary string.
For an n-bit value, valid positions are:
Where Is Bit Toggling Used?
Flags and Settings
Toggle operations can switch individual binary flags between enabled and disabled states.
Bitmasks
XOR masks provide an efficient way to toggle selected positions.
Embedded Systems
Individual register bits are frequently manipulated in low-level programming.
Algorithm Practice
Bit toggling is a fundamental bit-manipulation operation in computer science.
Common Bit Toggle Mistakes
Counting Position from the Left
This calculator uses rightmost bit = position 0.
Confusing Toggle with Set
Toggle flips the current state instead of always changing the bit to 1.
Confusing Toggle with Clear
Toggle changes 0 to 1 as well as 1 to 0.
Using an Invalid Position
The requested position must be smaller than the total bit width.
