What Is BCD to Decimal Conversion?

BCD to decimal conversion decodes Binary-Coded Decimal into ordinary base-10 digits. In standard 8421 BCD, every decimal digit is represented independently by a four-bit binary group.

Why Don’t You Add the Decoded BCD Digits?

Each BCD group represents one position in the decimal numeral. The groups are not independent values that should be summed.

BCD: 0010 0101 means: digit 2 followed by digit 5 Therefore the answer is: 25 not: 2 + 5 = 7

Invalid BCD Groups

Four bits can represent values from 0 through 15. Standard 8421 BCD only uses the first ten values because a decimal digit ranges only from 0 through 9.

Invalid BCD groups: 1010 = 10 1011 = 11 1100 = 12 1101 = 13 1110 = 14 1111 = 15 None of these can represent a single decimal digit in standard BCD.

BCD vs Excess-3

BCD and Excess-3 both encode decimal digits using four-bit groups, but their digit mappings are different.

Decimal digit 5: BCD = 0101 Excess-3 = 1000 Standard BCD directly represents the digit. Excess-3 first adds 3.

Can BCD Contain Leading Zeros?

Yes. Leading decimal zeros can be represented using the BCD group 0000.
