What Does Set Bit Mean?
Setting a bit means forcing a selected binary position to the value
1.
If the selected bit is already 1, the binary string remains unchanged. If it is 0, that bit changes to 1.
How to Set a Binary Bit
1. Enter the Binary Value
Use a binary string containing only 0 and 1.
2. Choose the Position
Position 0 is the rightmost bit.
3. Read the Existing Bit
The selected position may currently be either 0 or 1.
4. Force It to 1
The result always contains 1 at the selected position.

Set Bit Using OR
In bitwise programming, a selected bit can be set using the OR operation with a mask containing a 1 at that position.
OR with 1 produces 1, while OR with 0 leaves the original bit unchanged.

Why Preserve Leading Zeros?
Bit operations depend on exact positions. Leading zeros may therefore represent valid positions in a fixed-width binary value.
What If the Position Is Outside the Bit Width?
The selected position must already exist in the entered binary string. BinaryCon does not automatically expand the width.

Common Bit Set Mistakes
Counting from the Left
This calculator counts positions from the right, beginning at 0.
Thinking Set Means Toggle
Set always produces 1. It does not flip an existing 1 back to 0.
Removing Leading Zeros
Doing so can alter the fixed-width positional structure.
Using an Invalid Position
The position must be between 0 and bit width minus 1.
