How to Extract a Binary Bit

Extracting a Bit with a Mask

In programming, a bit is commonly extracted using a one-bit mask and a bitwise AND operation.

Extract position 2 from: 101101 Mask for position 2: 000100 AND: 101101 000100 —— 000100 The result is non-zero, so position 2 contains: 1

Shift-and-Mask Method

Another common programming method is to shift the selected bit to position 0 and then apply a mask of 1.

Why Position 0 Starts on the Right

The rightmost bit represents 2⁰, so it is conventionally called bit position 0.

Why Leading Zeros Matter

Leading zeros remain part of the entered bit width and therefore affect the visible position map.

What If the Selected Position Does Not Exist?

For an n-bit binary string, valid extraction positions are 0 through n−1.

Counting from the Left

Starting Positions at 1

Positions are zero-based, so the first position is 0.

Removing Leading Zeros

Extracting Outside the Width
